France has threatened to block exports of AstraZeneca vaccines from the EU (2021)

France has threatened to block exports of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines from the European Union, after Italy used EU rules to stop 250,000 doses of the Oxford University jab being sent to Australia.

This is despite the fact that in January 2021, French president Emmanuel Macron claimed that the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine was "quasi-ineffective" for over-65s, hours before it was approved by regulators for use on all adults in the EU.

Macron's negative comments about the AstraZeneca and the quality of the testing carried out by the UK regulators seem to have resonated with the French people.

Only 273,000 doses of the jab developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University have been administered in France out of 1.7 million received as of end-February, according to health ministry figures.

Blocking exports of a vaccine that they do not want sounds like sour grapes to me!
